When considering reaching out for help look for an experienced psychologist in clinical practice since 1985.

Dr. Caliso's clinical practice encompasses psychotherapy with adolescence, adults and couples.  His approach is an integration of psychodynamic and relational principles.  This approach has an emphasis on helping people learn to integrate a stronger skill set to approach various elements of life.  For example, enhanced skills to deal with stressful conditions in the work place, social relationships, marital communications, and family dynamics.  With a stronger level of competency, Dr. Caliso helps clients appreciate more opportunities to work and enjoy others.

He offers one day training sessions and supervision in SIBS.  Dr. Caliso has given over 50 local and national presentations on SIBS.  He has trained approximately 20 school districts in the use and interpretation of data from SIBS.

More recently, Dr. Caliso has completed intensive training in Couples Therapy from two psychoanalytic institutes. In June 2021, he completed a program at The Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey in Psychoanalytic-Systems Couples Therapy. In addition to the completion of a sequence of course work, he received one year of supervision with a senior supervisor to attest to his satisfactory completion of the program. PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

Contemplating to reach out for psychological help is typically a last resort after a person tries to handle issues and problems on their own. It is a critical personal decision steeped in the will and hope that mutual work with another will lead to understanding and wellness.

Yet the decision may be mixed with some hesitation. Reaching out to someone you don't know stirs up not only feelings of hope, but trepidation over whether the right choice was made or will there be a positive connection.  I make every effort to help my clients feel comfortable and at ease from the moment he/she makes the first phone call, to our first meeting and thereafter. Collaboration is essential in the therapeutic process as in any other relationship.  Mutual respect guides our work together to secure understanding and growth.

PUBLICATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS

Spanning over a 35 year professional career, Dr. Caliso has written a number of clinical papers and research articles in a range of psychological areas. These areas reflect his varied interest over the years.  Publications consist of ethical issues in the patient-therapist relationship, personality characteristics of child abusing parents, physically abused in childhood:who reads the pattern who does not, understanding competency and shame in the learning disabled child, parenting children with learning challenges, and  observing children to determine level of support.

Dr. Caliso has made over 60 local and national presentations.  These presentations have encompassed a variety of clinical areas. A sampling includes: childhood history of abuse and screening for potential to abuse; social support in childhood and potential for abuse; assessing the need for para-educator support in the classroom; using data to determine level of support a child requires in the classroom; ethical considerations in the therapist patient relationship; and preventing multi-generational abuse.

ORIENTATION

In an effort to assist clients, Dr. Caliso has strived to provide his clients with a well balanced approach to understanding reasons for their current distress.  Whether the consultation is for an individual or couple, it is critical to understand the underlying issues thats led to the turmoil, and expressions of that turmoil in actions, decisions, and behavior.  Advancements in psychological interventions have evolved over the years.  Dr. Caliso has training in psychodynamic, relational, and cognitive  psychotherapy.  He, therefore, has an electic approach to helping individuals and couples to approach daily problems with greater insight and expanding tools to resolve issues.   He is currently in the "couples therapy training program" offered by the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey.

SPECIALITIES

Dr. Caliso is very knowledgeable in treating a range of issues that hamper and challenge individuals in their day to day lives.  Although diagnostic categories and/or labels are necessary in understanding psychological issues, Dr. Caliso enjoys moving beyond the labels to formulating a collaborative  therapeutic relationship that allows the individual to seek understanding about a myriad of complex challenges and hurdles in life experiences. Within the therapeutic relationship, Dr. Caliso helps the individual gain an understanding of debilitating anxiety, and phobias that constrict life to a  small psychological space.

Individuals frequently complain of sustained depression.  Life lacks fulfillment and joy. A mutual collaboration explores the underlying reasons that prevent a person from feeling connected to their life.  That is, relationships, profession, recreation and social network are not sufficient enough to make one happy and at ease with their life. In both anxiety and depression, the individual has long standing narratives that significantly impede them, but self discovery can untangle this web toward improvement.

Marriages can have there ups and downs. Sustaining long term commitments is a challenge.  Dr. Caliso believes that strengthening the skills of collaboration, negotiation, and compromise is essential to a long term relationship.  Equally important is redefining the concepts love and caring.  What it meant at 25 years of age is certainly different than at 40 or 50.  Re-examining and learning from each other what is the different can reignite an old flame, and renew the partnership.

"to love for a lifetime takes talent! you have to mix yourself with the strange beauty of someone else" Mary MacKay

“Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better to take things as they come along with patience and equanimity.”

— CARL JUNG

And Bill Russell Adds regarding life and his experiences, “I don’t have many regrets, not because I lived a perfect life, but because life is a bunch of rolling hills, not mountains, or speed bumps instead of stop signs” He adds, “You come to a situation and it’s neither good or bad. It just is”.
